Anticipating climatic tipping points and regime shifts

Abstract:

During its natural or anthropogenically-forced evolution, climate and other environmental systems may approach a state, a tipping point, where a small perturbation triggers a large response or even a complete change of regime. These abrupt changes may be irreversible and difficult to predict, with the potential to produce a large impact on society.

In this lecture we will summarize examples of tipping points in the Earth system, mathematical modeling of their nature and properties, and methodologies to anticipate them by listening to early-warning signals.
