Large-scale Transport in Oceans
Oceanic processes are typically slower than atmospheric ones. Thus, as we consider the dynamics of the Earth system at increasingly longer temporal scales, from weather to subseasonal, seasonal and beyond, ocean dynamics and coupled atmosphere-ocean processes become very relevant.
These lectures will provide an elementary introduction to basic elements of ocean dynamics including wind-driven and thermohaline circulation, geostrophic currents, mesoscale eddies, jets and waves. Particular emphasis will be given to transport processes and methods to quantify them.
